Singular And Plural Noun

Definition:

Singular:
When a noun refers to one person, animal or thing, we say that the noun is in singular.

Plural:
When a noun refers to more than one person, animal or thing, we say that the noun is in plural.

Example:

i)Some singular nouns form their plurals by adding -s at the end
dog-dogs
cat-cats
house-houses
table-tables

ii)Some singular nouns  end with -ch, -sh, -ss and -x form their plural nouns by adding -es.
Dish-Dishes
Glass-Glasses
bunch-bunches
bus-buses
box-boxes

iii)Some singular nouns end with -o from their plurals by adding 'es'.
Potato-Potatoes
Hero-Heroes

Note:
The nouns piano and photo do not follow this rule. They from their plural nouns by adding 
-s, that is pianos and photos

iv)Some singular nouns that end in -f and -fe, the -f or -fe is changed into -v and -es is added.
leaf-leaves
knife-knives

v)Some singular nouns end with -y the -y changed into -i  and add 'es'.
Army-Armies
Baby-Babies

vi)Some singular nouns end with any vowel with -y. Adding -s they get their plural nouns.
Boy-Boys
Toys-Toys

Note:
The nouns chief, dwarf, root, hoof, proof and gulf do not follow the rules. They get their plural noun by adding -s. So we say ,chiefs, dwarfs (also dwarves), roofs, hoofs (also hooves),proofs and gulfs.

vii)There are some nouns that do not follow any of the above rules
1.Child-Children
2.Man-Men
3.Tooth-Teeth
4.Mouse-Mice

Note:
The nouns fish and fruit remain the same both in singular and plural, unless
used to mean different types of fish or different types of fruit.
For example,
1.The ocean is full of fishes.
2.The fruit salad was made up of different kinds of fruits.
