Words that tell us more about a verb are called Adverbs

For example,
  • Vishal ran slowly.  
  • Vishal ran quickly.
Read these sentence.
  • Suhani dance gracefully.
  • The cat slept quietly.
The highlighted adverbs tell us   how Suhani danced, and how  the cat slept.

Types of Adverbs

  1. Adverbs of manner
  2. Adverbs of time
  3. Adverbs of place
  4. Adverbs of degree
  5. Adverbs of frequency

1.Adverbs of Manner

Adverb that tell us how ( or what manner )   an action is done are called adverb of manner.

Adverbs of manner can be formed in the following ways.

We get adverbs of manner by adding -ly   to the adjective .

For example, 
  • She smiled warmly.   (Adjective warm )   
  • He speaks clearly . ( Adjective clear
When the adjective ends in -y   we change the -y to -i   and add -ly

For example ,
  • He shouted angrily ( Adjective angry
  • The children waved happily ( Adjective happy
 When the adjective ends in -e we drop -e and add -ly

For example,
  • He loved her truly ( Adjective true
  • I am terribly busy ( Adjective terrible )

2.Adverbs of time


Adverbs that tell us when ( or what time ) an action happens are called adverbs of time.

For example ,

  • The guests will arrive tomorrow
  • Karthik left late  
  • You must get up early

3. Adverbs of Place 

Adverbs that tell us where ( or at what place ) an action happens or where someone goes are called adverbs of Place.

For example, 

  • Amandeep went upstairs 
  • Rajan went outside

4. Adverbs of degree.

Adverbs that tell us degree or extent of an action or a quality are called adverbs of degree.

  • It is very cold. ( adverb - very , adjective - cold ) 
  • This sum is extremely difficult. ( adverbs - extremely , adjective - difficult)

5.Adverbs of frequency

Adverb of frequency tell us how many times the action occurs,occurred or will occur.
For example,
  • Sita and I go to school daily
  • The workers get their salaries every month
In the above sentence,the words daily and every answer the question how many times or how frequently an action takes place.
